A purrfect opportunity

Today’s Daily Prompt theme is Ripped from the Headlines!

“Head to your favorite online news source. Pick an article with a headline that grabs you. Now, write a short story based on the article.”

Here’s a headline that grabbed me. Human skull found. “A citizen walking in the wooded area, covered in dense brush, around 1 p.m. Sunday stumbled upon the remains and contacted police.” Yadda yadda yadda. If you want facts, read the newspaper article. If you want story, read below.

We eradicated them centuries ago when we deemed them no longer useful to us.

When we first came to the world of the two-legs, millennia ago, it took a lot of work to train them. They were useful in bringing us water, food, medical aid.

We guided their development. When Two-leg Newton sat under the tree, it was one of our people that went out on a limb, literally, crawled out on a branch and knocked down that ball that fell on his head. I think the two-legs call it “apple”.

We invented the Internet as a way of extending our reach and of further controlling the two-legs. The two-legs think they invented the Internet, but look at the photos and videos and you will see that we are the dominating species.

We wander at night while the two-legs sleep and we program into their minds what we want them to know. Sometimes close physical proximity is required to facilitate this and sometimes we use our vocalizations to enhance the programming.

The two-legs did a fair job of looking after us and not so good job of looking after themselves and this world. Although there had been some dissension we finally agreed to eradicate them.

Some of us talk about bringing back the two-legs. With the human skull that we have found, we have their DNA and are considering recreating them.

Perhaps they’ll do a better job next time. They brought us tuna, and some of us do miss them.
